  • In October, those American Community policy/certificate holders who are affected by this withdrawal received a letter informing them that their coverage will terminate and the effective date of the termination. Although the termination date varies by policy, the earliest possible date that coverage will terminate is May 1, 2011.

American Community has reached an agreement with UnitedHealthcare Golden Rule Insurance Company (Golden Rule) to provide an offer for replacement health insurance coverage for American Community Individual insureds. Golden Rule is extending this offer without underwriting and with no exclusions for pre-existing conditions, meaning that insureds cannot be turned down because of their health.

Eligible insureds have already received their notification letters from Golden Rule via postal mail. Insureds are encouraged to consider this offer or seek an alternate health insurance company in order to maintain uninterrupted coverage. They may also want to discuss their health insurance options with their agent.

Until policy/certificate holders obtain other health insurance coverage, they should continue to pay their premiums to keep their American Community policy in force. Once they have obtained other coverage, they need to notify American Community to terminate their policy.

On April 8, 2010, Ingham County (Michigan) Circuit Court Judge William E. Collette issued a Rehabilitation Order placing American Community Mutual Insurance Company ("American Community") into Rehabilitation and named the Commissioner of the Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation ("OFIR") as the company's Rehabilitator. Rehabilitation is a corporate reorganization under Chapter 81 of the Michigan Insurance Code that is conducted under the supervision of the Ingham County Circuit Court. The Rehabilitation Order allows OFIR to ascertain American Community's financial condition and implement steps to protect American Community policyholders and creditors in all states where the company has business.
